The Russian authorities have approved a law that allows cutting down of the forest that is surrounding The Baikal Lake. This regulation came into life as the result of the construction of the Russian railway. The lake is one of the oldest and largest in the world, and now its forest areas will be reduced. The new law will apply until December 31, 2024. According to the authorities of the Russian Federation, the new regulation does not create a direct threat to the natural environment.
Russian environmentalists, social activists, and Internet users are already protesting against this law. In recent years, environmental protests in Russia, including those against other investments planned around Lake Baikal, have been often and have many times became successful. Maybe this time it will also end up like that?
