Is pandemic a threat to animals?

Scientists from the University of California in Davis warn – the coronavirus pandemic is a risk to endangered animal species. The pathogen is the greatest danger to the family of primates. 40% of the most vulnerable species are threatened with extinction.

The highest risk group includes western lowland gorillas, northern gibbons, chimpanzees, and bonobos. Apart from them, beluga, snowy, killer whales, Siberian tigers, and reindeer can also be susceptible to infection. Scientists report that the risk of infection for pets is low. Pet owners can rest easy. According to specialists, dogs are in the low-risk group and cats – medium risk. However, they recommend greater caution to the keepers of wild animals in zoos.
