The UN calls for climate action to reduce possible disasters. In its latest report, Human Cost of Disasters 2000-2019, published on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, it warns leaders and citizens about the climate disaster.
Over the past 20 years, more than 7,300 natural disasters have been reported worldwide, causing damage totaling nearly 3 trillion dollars. According to the report, most of the disasters were directly related to the climate. Over the past two decades, there has been a huge increase in the number of floods, storms, heatwaves, droughts, hurricanes, and wildfires.
The UN Secretary-General addressed all citizens of the Earth, and in particular politicians and influential organizations: “To get rid of poverty and reduce the effects of climate change, we must put the public good above all other considerations.”
