World Oceans Day

June 8 is World Oceans Day. This is a good opportunity to realize how we should use the resources of the seas and oceans to protect them. Water covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. The seas and oceans produce most of the available oxygen, they also support many branches of the economy and provide us with food. According to the Marine Stewardship Council, fish and seafood are a source of protein for over 3 billion people worldwide, and several hundred million people live off fishing. The future of both our planet and ours depends on the condition of the seas and oceans. Unfortunately, we forget about it too often. A holiday like this is to remind us of that. It is worth realizing that life on Earth depends on the welfare of the oceans, and their fate depends on the actions of all of us.

Unfortunately, the ecosystems of the oceans are under threat as a result of irresponsible human activity. Today’s holiday is the right moment to stop and think – what can we do to prevent the situation from worsening?

World Ocean Day was established by the United Nations in 2009.
